Jowai: Transportation of cement and clinker across the Jaintia Hills came to a standstill on Monday as truckers under the banner of the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA) launched an indefinite protest at the Jowai Bypass in Soomer Mihmyntdu.
The agitation, which has disrupted supply routes to several factories in East Jaintia Hills, stems from the truckers’ allegation that the industries have failed to comply with the freight rates set by the state government.
Despite a written appeal from the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills on October 24 urging the association to withdraw its proposed protest, the MCTODA went ahead with the plan, declaring that their demonstration was a fight for their rightful dues.

Authorities, including police personnel and magistrates, were stationed at the protest site in an attempt to mediate with the truckers.
However, discussions between the two sides ended without any breakthrough.
As of late Monday, the agitation continued, with MCTODA leaders saying it would not be called off until the factories agree to the government-approved transportation fares.
