Shillong: Of the 45 localities shortlisted in the first phase, CCTV systems have been completed in about 25 areas, with the remaining 20 to be covered soon, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Monday while launching the City Beautification Drive at Mawlai Mawroh in Shillong.

Addressing residents and local leaders, the chief minister said the initiative is part of the state government’s sustained efforts, through the Urban Affairs Department and municipal bodies, to improve cleanliness, safety and overall aesthetics in urban areas.

He noted that the programme has gained momentum due to active participation from communities and localities across the city.

Sangma said the installation of CCTV cameras and street lights was a direct outcome of earlier consultations with Rangbah Shnongs and other stakeholders, during which several localities had flagged the need for enhanced surveillance and public safety measures.

He added that the process would continue, with more areas to be taken up under a second phase of the project.

Emphasising collaborative governance, the chief minister said visible and lasting urban transformation is possible only when communities and the government work together.

He added that even small interventions can create a significant impact on the quality of life and the broader development process.

The programme also featured an open interaction session, during which headmen from different parts of Shillong raised issues related to street lighting, CCTV coverage, parking facilities, pedestrian footpaths, water supply and drainage.

During the event, Sangma distributed beautification grants to localities and formally inaugurated the CCTV installation at Mawlai Mawroh. He later visited Mawlai Iewrynghep as part of the City Beautification Drive.
