Shillong: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a prominent professor and dean from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, along with a private individual, in a bribery case involving Rs. 3.43 lakh.
The arrests occurred at the Guwahati University Guest House during a transaction of the alleged bribe.
The accused, identified as Professor Nirmalendu Saha, Dean of the School of Life Sciences at NEHU, and Pranjal Sharma, a proprietor from Guwahati, were apprehended as part of an operation conducted by the CBI based on information regarding corrupt practices.
According to the CBI, Sharma allegedly collaborated with Saha to facilitate illicit gains in exchange for awarding supply orders for scientific equipment and laboratory items, as well as clearing associated bills.

A case was registered against the duo on June 11, 2025, and a trap was set to catch them in the act.
Following the arrests, the CBI conducted searches at two locations, uncovering incriminating documents. Additional searches are underway.
The accused were set to be presented before a competent court in Guwahati on Thursday.
