Shillong: The Border Security Force (BSF) has intensified security measures and placed its troops on high alert along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, following heightened concerns over regional security, a senior BSF official confirmed on Wednesday.
“In light of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the unrest in Bangladesh last year, our forces are fully prepared operationally. Troops remain on high alert and all necessary preventive measures are in place,” said OP Upadhyay, Inspector General of BSF’s Meghalaya Frontier.
Upadhyay noted that cooperation with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) has been strong, with several arrests made recently based on intelligence shared during joint flag meetings.
“The BGB has been proactive and responsive, especially in cracking down on touts and individuals attempting illegal border crossings,” he said.
Highlighting inter-agency coordination, the IG stated that 24 checkpoints are being jointly operated by BSF personnel and Meghalaya Police to ensure effective surveillance and law enforcement.
“This collaboration has significantly curbed illegal infiltration, with a 90 percent reduction in cross-border movement of Bangladeshi nationals in the Garo Hills region,” he added.
Addressing concerns over tourist safety, particularly at the popular Dawki waterfront, Upadhyay assured that the BSF is taking proactive steps to safeguard both locals and visitors.
“The security of every citizen, including tourists, remains a top priority,” he said.
