NEW DELHI: The Catholic Church in India mourns the loss of Bishop George Mamalassery, Bishop Emeritus of Tura, who passed away today at 2:20 am in Holy Cross Hospital, Tura, Meghalaya.
Known for his unwavering dedication and profound spirituality, Bishop George’s legacy of service and compassion continues to inspire generations.
A Life of Humble Beginnings
Born on April 23, 1932, in Kalathoor, Kerala, George Mamalassery was the youngest of three children. Orphaned at the age of twelve, he found solace and purpose in the Church, joining the Sacred Heart Seminary in Poonamallee for the Diocese of Madras-Mylapore.
His journey from 1950 to 1960 was marked by a deep missionary zeal, culminating in his ordination by Rev. Louis Mathias D.D. on April 24, 1960.
Embracing the scripture from 1 Cor 9:22, “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some,” he dedicated his life to the service of others.
Missionary Work in the Northeast
Answering the call to serve in the challenging terrains of Northeast, Bishop George was sent to the Garo Hills in the Archdiocese of Shillong-Guwahati.
His early years as an assistant parish priest in Tura and Baghmara were marked by his courageous spirit and unwavering commitment, despite the region’s endemic malaria and perilous wildlife.
In 1970, he became the Parish Priest of Dalu, where his humanitarian efforts during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War provided shelter, food, and support to displaced people.
His compassionate heart and tireless spirit endeared him to many.
A Shepherd to the Diocese of Tura
Appointed as the first Bishop of Tura on February 8, 1979, Bishop George’s ordination followed on March 18, 1979.
At his Episcopal Ordination, he took the motto, “Thy Kingdom Come.” (Mt. 6:10).
Under his leadership, the diocese flourished with the expansion of 14 existing centres and the establishment of 23 new parishes, complete with churches, presbyteries, convents, dispensaries, hostels, and schools.
His vision extended beyond spiritual guidance, focusing on education and healthcare to uplift the socio-economic standards of the region.
Bishop George’s commitment to education saw the establishment of a network of institutions even in the most remote areas.
He invited the Salesians and Jesuits to set up colleges in Tura and Williamnagar, respectively, and founded the 150-bed Holy Cross Hospital in Tura in 1993.
His numerous construction projects earned him the affectionate title of “Engineer Bishop.”
A Champion of Healthcare and Social Service
Bishop George’s dedication to healthcare led to the founding of the Rino Simonetti School of Nursing in Tura and the Montfort Centre for the Physically Challenged.
His visionary approach also saw the establishment of Bakdil, the diocesan social service centre, which grew into one of Northeast India’s leading NGOs.
His initiatives in collaboration with the government, such as the residential school for dropout girls in Jengjal, exemplify his commitment to social welfare.
A Legacy of Humility and Service
Bishop George’s life was a testament to living the Gospel values.
His simplicity, humility, and pastoral charity made him a beloved figure among the clergy, religious, and laity.
His life of austerity and pastoral zeal was a beacon of inspiration, embodying the heart of the Good Shepherd.
Even after his retirement in 2007, Bishop George continued to serve the diocese from the Priest’s Home, receiving accolades such as the Pa Togan Sangma Award from the Government of Meghalaya and an honorary doctorate from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya in 2019.
