SHILLONG: The autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will be held from August 23 to August 30.

This was informed by Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma after chairing the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting on Friday.

Sangma said that the calendar for the Assembly session has been approved by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC).

“So the autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will be convened on August 23 till August 30. We have decided to have five working days after comparing last year’s session,” he said.

Three days have been allotted for government business and two days for private members’ business.

The Business Advisory Committee meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Leader of Opposition Ronnie V Lyngdoh, and Public Accounts Committee chairman Charles Pyngrope.

Meanwhile, Sangma said that there is no change in the post of Leader of Opposition, which is currently being held by Congress leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh.

There have been questions about the post of Leader of Opposition as the Congress has been reduced to four MLAs in the 60-member House after Saleng A Sangma resigned as Gambegre MLA following his election as Tura MP.

The Trinamool Congress with five MLAs has a bigger strength in the opposition bench while Congress and VPP have four MLAs each.

The Speaker further said that the ongoing construction of the new building of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has been affected to a great extent due to the “absence” of labourers.
