Shillong: As concerns mount over the Centre’s recent Office Memorandum exempting public consultation for mining critical and atomic minerals, including uranium, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District Unit has announced that it will observe October 28 as “Anti-Uranium Day” at Domiasiat village.
The event will commemorate the fifth death anniversary of noted anti-uranium activist Spility Lyngdoh Langrin.
KSU-SWKHD publicity secretary Macdonald Marbaniang said the programme will begin with a public meeting at 11:30 am, followed by a floral tribute at Langrin’s grave.
He described Langrin as one of the leading voices of Meghalaya’s anti-uranium movement since the 1990s, remembered for her unwavering opposition to uranium mining in Domiasiat and Mawthabah.
Marbaniang recalled that Langrin had rejected large monetary offers from both the Government of India and the Uranium Corporation of India Limited in exchange for mining consent, choosing instead to stand by her principles.
He added that this year’s observance is meant to reaffirm KSU’s continued opposition to uranium mining in the region.
“We remain firm in our stand that no uranium mining or related exploratory activities will be allowed in Domiasiat or Mawthabah, regardless of whether they are initiated by the state or central government,” Marbaniang said, urging members of the union and the public to join the event in solidarity.
