SHILLONG: Amidst protest by Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) over the arrest of its two members in Ichamati double murder case, the East Khasi Hills police have reiterated its stance that the arrests were made based on substantial evidence
Superintendent of Police, Rituraj Ravi, while speaking to the press on Wednesday, stressed that the arrests were made based on accurate investigation undertaken by the police, citing the collection of evidence, witness accounts, and scientific data from the crime scene.
“We have been investigating this case in accordance with the provisions of the law, and we have made significant progress based on the evidence collected,” SP Ravi was quoted by a local news portal as saying.

Earlier on Wednesday, tension flared as a group, including KSU members and villagers from Laitkynsew and Sohra areas, attempted to storm the Sohra police station.
They demanded the release of the two KSU members arrested in connection with the tragic killing of two individuals in Ichamati, Shella.
Among the protesters were family members of the arrested KSU members, accompanied by union leaders Reuben Najiar and Reebokstar Diengdoh.
Describing the situation, SP Ravi noted that approximately 300-400 individuals gathered at the Sohra Police Station to protest the arrests. Despite the sizable crowd, the protest remained peaceful, and participants dispersed after some time, he informed.
Meanwhile, the incident has drawn reaction from organisations such as the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).

In a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, the parishad has appealed for her intervention into the matter. The VHP called for a thorough investigation by central probe agencies, following an anti-CAA rally in the state, which allegedly led to the tragic deaths of the individuals.
On April 1, the police arrested two KSU members, Shamborlang Shati and Mesadapbor Skhembil, both aged 26 and hailing from Sohra, in connection with the killings in Ichamati, East Khasi Hills.
The East Khasi Hills district, under Shella constituency, witnessed a tragic incident where two individuals lost their lives on March 27. Identified as Ishan Singh and Sujit Dutta, their bodies were discovered in Ichamati and Dalda, respectively, as confirmed by the police.
