Shillong: The All Meghalaya SSA School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA) has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to enhance the salary of over 13,000 SSA teachers.
In a letter to PM Modi, the association on Monday urged the Prime Minister to take prompt action regarding the enhancement of SSA teachers’ salaries.
“Considering the cost of living and inflation and in the midst of such horrible suffering of SSA teachers in the state, we request and seek your kind intervention to approach the education incharge of Meghalaya and concerned authorities to fulfil our demands with immediate effect before the situation deteriorated for SSA teachers of Meghalaya,” it added.
The association stated that the SSA teachers received salary increments during the 2016-2017 financial year. The salary increments ranged from Rs 9,200 to Rs 19,044 for Lower Primary (LP) teachers and from Rs 9,900 to Rs 20,493 for Upper Primary (UP) teachers, it said.
The AMSSASTA is currently staging an indefinite sit-in protest, which has now entered its seventh day, to demand a 100% salary increase.
The association also added, “Due to reluctance of the state government of Meghalaya to fulfil our demands, the SSA teachers from all sections of religions and communities were compelled to take out sit-in-demonstration in Shillong since October 1 till this Puja vacation to show our protest against the failure of the state government.”
According to the association, the rising cost of living, combined with educational expenses and economic burdens like GST, has created severe financial hardships for SSA teachers.
