Shillong: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a tender worth Rs. 119.44 crore for the long-awaited expansion of Shillong Airport.
The project, expected to be completed in 18 months, marks a significant step forward in the state government’s efforts to transform Meghalaya into a regional tourism and investment hub.
The expansion will include a 571-metre extension of the existing runway—bringing the total length to 2,400 metres—enabling the operation of larger A-320 type aircraft.
The project also includes upgrades to the terminal building, apron, and supporting infrastructure.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma welcomed the move, calling it “a moment of great satisfaction and optimism.”
He credited the Centre’s approval to sustained advocacy by the state government over the past several years.
“Improved air connectivity is not just about convenience—it’s about unlocking economic opportunities, boosting tourism, and empowering our youth,” he said, adding that the expansion would be a “game changer” for the people of Meghalaya.
The AAI submitted a draft master plan for the project in August 2024, and the state is currently in the process of acquiring an additional 22 acres of land required for the expansion.
The project forms part of Meghalaya’s broader infrastructure development agenda.
The state government has earmarked close to Rs. 4,000 crore to develop and strengthen tourism circuits and is actively inviting private sector participation.
Plans are underway to establish premium resorts in Umiam, Shillong, and New Shillong.
In addition, the government laid the foundation for the state’s first passenger ropeway in December 2024.
The Shillong Ropeway Project aims to link major tourist and cultural landmarks across the city to promote sustainable urban transport.

Parallel initiatives in Mawsynram, Mandalgre, Marngar, and Wahkhen—focused on experiential tourism—are expected to generate employment for youth across the state. Strategic road connectivity projects are also being implemented to link Shillong with the emerging New Shillong Township.
The enhanced air connectivity is expected to complement Meghalaya’s growing calendar of cultural festivals, including the internationally recognised Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, Me’gong Festival in Tura, and Winter Tales.
