Tura: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday visited the construction site of the upcoming Tura Medical College and expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, stating that nearly 80 percent of the civil construction has been completed.
Speaking during the inspection, the chief minister said the state government is aiming to complete the project within the current calendar year and operationalise the college by the next academic session.
“The progress is satisfactory, and we are optimistic that a major portion of the infrastructure will be ready within this year,” he said.
He further noted that the government is closely monitoring the construction process to ensure that deadlines are met.
“We are making every effort to begin academic activities at Tura Medical College as early as possible,” Sangma added.
Highlighting future plans, the chief minister said the government is exploring partnership models for managing the institution, though ownership will remain with the state.
He emphasised that the college is intended primarily to benefit students from Meghalaya, with a majority of seats reserved for local candidates to improve access to medical education.
The establishment of the Tura Medical College is part of a broader initiative to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the state, particularly in the Garo Hills region.
