Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the 7th Act East Business Show on Tuesday at the State Convention Centre, Shillong.
The three-day event, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya, aims to strengthen trade and economic ties with BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal) and ASEAN nations.
Welcoming delegates from countries including Australia, Bhutan, Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and the UAE, the chief minister highlighted Meghalaya’s strategic proximity to BBIN and ASEAN nations, positioning the state as a potential hub for trade, commerce, and connectivity.
“This event is not just a platform for industrialists, leaders, policymakers, and entrepreneurs but also an opportunity to build partnerships and foster mutual understanding,” Sangma said.
He emphasised the strong political will driving the development of the North East region, stating, “From the Prime Minister to the Chief Ministers of North Eastern states, there is a unified desire to push forward this region.”
The chief minister noted that Meghalaya’s growth rate has surpassed the national average in recent years, attributing this success to government policies, community involvement, and initiatives supporting young entrepreneurs.
He reiterated the state’s commitment to sustainable growth, emphasizing the importance of respecting the environment, culture, tradition, and community.
“Each state in the North East is unique, and a one-size-fits-all Act East Policy is not practical. Specific strategies and targets must be designed for every state and zone,” he added.
Sangma also called for enhanced global collaboration, particularly in sectors such as healthcare training, IT, tourism, and agri-business, while encouraging investments in agriculture, textiles, health, and renewable energy.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, alongside prominent diplomats and business leaders, also addressed the inaugural session.

The event features participation from 14 nations and includes an exhibition inaugurated by the chief minister and other dignitaries.
Over the three days, attendees will engage in roundtable discussions, B2B and B2G meetings, and sessions focusing on innovation and technology, agriculture, food processing, tourism, and hospitality in North East India.
