Jowai: The ceremonial torch of the 6th Meghalaya Games 2025, which was flagged off on January 17 from PA Sangma Stadium in Tura, has now entered its final stages in Jowai, ahead of the official countdown to the Games.
The Meghalaya Games will be officially inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, accompanied by Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri and other distinguished dignitaries.
The event marks an important milestone for the state, both in terms of athleticism and community engagement.
The torch relay, which traverses various districts across the state, is not just a symbol of the Games, but also of Meghalaya’s commitment to cultural harmony.
The relay brings together the state’s diverse communities, celebrating inclusivity and unity while promoting cultural exchange and the preservation of traditional arts.
As the torch passes through different regions, it carries with it the essence of shared aspirations, reinforcing the message that Meghalaya, despite its diversity, stands united in its pursuit of sporting excellence.
This year’s Meghalaya Games promises to be the biggest edition yet, with over 3,500 athletes — the highest participation ever — competing for 1,600 medals across 23 venues, including Shillong and Laitkor.
For the first time, the Games will also feature para-athletes, with seven athletes (four women and three men) participating in the para-shooting events, including pistol and rifle categories.
The torch relay has been a major highlight, energizing communities as it travels across the state.
Starting from Tura, where Golfer Jason Passah and athlete Himonki Khaii began the journey, the flame made its way through Shillong and East Khasi Hills, carried by Constable Okitlang Syiemlieh of Meghalaya Police.
The torch was displayed for an hour at the MUDA complex two-wheeler parking lot in Shillong, giving the public and sports enthusiasts an opportunity to celebrate and capture the moment.
Continuing its journey, the torch has now reached Jowai, with the final lap set to take place in Thadlaskein.
