SHILLONG: The 2nd North-East Regatta 2024 got underway at the picturesque Umiam Sailing Club (USC), Watersports Complex, Shillong, with a grand opening ceremony.
Scheduled until April 6, the national ranking event promises to surpass the success of its inaugural edition.
With over 100 participants from across the nation, including 106 sailors from 17 clubs across 10 classes, the event unfolds against the stunning backdrop of Umiam Lake.
Backed by the support of local communities and the government, the regatta is poised to be a vibrant celebration of athleticism, sportsmanship, and the indomitable spirit of adventure.
The inaugural ceremony of the event witnessed the Donald P Wahlang, IAS, Chief Secretary of the Government of Meghalaya, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Wahlang expressed his delight at the regatta being recognised as a national ranking event.
He extended his appreciation to the Army officials for their invaluable support, particularly highlighting the participation of Arjuna awardee Rajesh Chaudhary, expected to inspire and motivate the young competitors.
Wahlang also stressed on the state government’s initiative in establishing the club under the tourism department, not only to organise sailing competitions but also to promote Meghalaya as a premier tourist destination.
TSA Narayanan, Vice President of the Yachting Association of India (YAI), outlined the association’s vision to expand the sport to the district taluk level, aligning with the sports code.
Organised at USC in collaboration with UDAY for Sailors Foundation and Yachting Association of India (YAI), the regatta is poised to be a vibrant celebration of athleticism and sportsmanship.
