Imphal: Women from the Vaiphei tribe reportedly staged a protest rally in Churachandpur, expressing their disappointment over Kuki-Zo MLA LM Khaute for accompanying Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to Imphal to stake a claim to form the government.
The demonstration was organised on Thursday by the Vaiphei Women Association (VWA), a civil body. The protesters assembled at the Vaiphei Peoples Council Hall in Churachandpur’s Dorcas Veng this morning before marching towards the MLA’s residence.
As per reports, security personnel from the Assam Rifles, Manipur Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) stopped the protesters, resulting in stone-pelting and clashes between the community members and security forces.
The protestors carried placards that read, “LM Khaute sold out” and “Our voices unheard.”

The agitation by tribal women escalated after Kuki-Zo MLAs, including Nemcha Kipgen, L.M. Khaute and Ngursanglur Sanate, attended the Manipur Assembly session virtually from New Delhi.
On the other hand, a group of Tangkhul Naga women attempted to storm the Litan Police Station, alleging that security forces had failed to bring the situation under control.
This comes after two more houses were set on fire in Litan Sareikhong village of Ukhrul district today despite an indefinite curfew being in force. Reportedly, police dispersed the agitating crowd by firing several rounds of tear gas shells.
