BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Manipur, Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, criticized the former UPA government for neglecting the Northeast, which he said led to the instability in the region.
He credited the Narendra Modi led-government for empowering the Northeast and putting it on a path of sustained development.
Speaking during the debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, Leishemba said the Northeast has received “unprecedented attention” under the current government.
He highlighted the Centre’s ‘Purvodaya’ vision, aimed at promoting inclusive development and long-term stability across the region.
Leishemba stated that the UPA government’s neglect pushed the Northeast toward underdevelopment and unrest.
“With the Purvodaya vision, our government is ensuring inclusive growth, turning the region into a growth engine for India while maintaining long-term stability,” he said.

He pointed to infrastructure and financial support as major drivers of change.
“Nearly 50,000 rural roads have been built to improve access to markets, schools, and offices, adding that Manipur received special assistance of Rs 3,356 crore for capital expenditure between 2020 and January 2026, provided as a 50-year interest-free loan,” he said.
He also highlighted the Centre’s efforts for tribal welfare, including health and education programs.
On connectivity, Leishemba said investments have expanded railway links to Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Mizoram, and expressed hope that Manipur would soon be connected to the national railway network.
He also mentioned tourism projects, including Rs 117 crore sanctioned under the Swadesh Darshan scheme for Manipur.
Leishemba thanked President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for transforming the Northeast, including Manipur, into a resilient and growing part of India.
