Shillong/Imphal/Guwahati: Manipur on Wednesday, experienced two consecutive earthquakes, with magnitudes of 5.7 and 4.1, causing tremors felt across the northeastern region, including Assam, Meghalaya, and other states.
The first quake, registering a magnitude of 5.7, struck at 11:06 AM, with its epicenter located 44 km east of Yairipok in Imphal East district at a depth of 110 km, according to the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong.
The second tremor, measuring 4.1 in magnitude, occurred at 12:20 PM in Kamjong district at a depth of 66 km.
In Manipur, several buildings developed cracks due to the quakes. Videos circulating on social media depicted damage to a school building in Wangjing Lamding, Thoubal district, which was serving as a relief camp for those affected by ethnic strife.

An official in Imphal stated, “We are confirming the reports of the damage.” No significant damage has been reported in other northeastern states thus far.
Earlier, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook central Assam early Thursday morning, according to an official bulletin.
No injuries or damage to property have been reported so far, officials confirmed.
The northeastern region of India lies in a high seismic zone, making it prone to frequent earthquakes.
