Tensions rise in Manipur as protesters clash with security forces

Imphal: Tensions flared in Imphal on Sunday as protesters clashed with security forces near the Raj Bhavan during a demonstration against the alleged erasure of Manipur’s name from a state transport bus.

The protest, led by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), was in response to a growing outcry over what is being seen as a direct affront to the state’s identity.

The agitation began at Khwairamband Bazar, where demonstrators gathered and began marching toward the Raj Bhavan, covering about 500 meters before being stopped by security personnel.

As the protesters attempted to move past Kangla Gate — approximately 150 meters from the Governor’s residence — security forces fired multiple tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

A scuffle ensued, resulting in injuries to at least five protesters who were later admitted to hospital.

Protesters demanded an apology from Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, accusing him of remaining silent over an incident they believe symbolises the diminishing of the state’s historical and cultural identity.

One demonstrator told reporters, “The Governor continues to ignore the emotions of the people. This administration has repeatedly insulted Manipur’s legacy. The inquiry commission formed is inadequate and doesn’t hold anyone accountable.”

The controversy stems from an incident on May 20 during the Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul district.

A government bus transporting journalists was reportedly stopped by security forces at the Gwaltabi checkpost and staff from the Directorate of Information and Public Relations were allegedly forced to cover the word “Manipur” on the bus’s windshield with a sheet of white paper.

Public outrage quickly followed, prompting COCOMI to call for statewide protests.

The organization has also demanded the resignation of the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police, and the state’s Security Advisor.

In response, the Manipur government announced a formal investigation into the incident.

A two-member inquiry committee was set up to examine the circumstances surrounding the actions of the security personnel involved and the treatment of the state-run bus.

According to an official order from the Home Department, the committee will assess the role of all parties involved in the May 20 episode and report its findings.

Despite the government’s assurances, COCOMI and civil society groups remain dissatisfied, vowing to continue their agitation until accountability is ensured and state pride is restored.
