Imphal: Security forces in Manipur on Wednesday prevented nearly 100 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from returning to their villages in Dolaithabi, located in the Imphal East district, citing security concerns.

According to police, the displaced persons—residents of Dolaithabi who have been living in a relief camp near Sajiwa—attempted to return to their native villages but were stopped near Pukhao Tezpur, approximately 2.5 km from their destination.

“They were halted as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident,” a senior police officer said, adding that Dolaithabi is situated in a sensitive fringe zone.

The area had witnessed a series of attacks from adjoining hill areas of Kangpokpi district following the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023.

To maintain law and order, the administration has deployed adequate security, including a company of CRPF women personnel in the vicinity.

Senior police officials and district authorities are currently holding discussions with local leaders to reach an amicable resolution to the situation.

“The overall situation remains peaceful and is under control. Law and order is being monitored closely by senior officers to ensure stability,” the police officer said.

More than 260 people have lost their lives, and thousands were displaced in ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May last year.

In response to the prolonged unrest, the Centre imposed President’s Rule in the state on February 13, 2025, after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stepped down. The Manipur Legislative Assembly remains under suspended animation, although its tenure extends until 2027.
