Imphal: Security forces have reportedly impounded a truck transporting timber allegedly smuggled from Manipur into Assam along National Highway-37, which connects the two states.
Two suspected smugglers were apprehended during the operations, officials said on Wednesday.
According to an official report submitted to the Forest Range Officer, Jiribam Range, reliable information was received on February 16 that a Tata truck was carrying timber from Imphal towards Jiribam.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team comprising personnel from the Special Mobile Patrol Unit, Jiribam, and the Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of 156 CRPF Battalion conducted a frisking and checking operation at Leingangpokpi village along NH-37. The drive was conducted under the supervision of the Additional SP/LO, Jiribam.

On the other hand, a Tata truck bearing registration number RJ14GN/3247 was stopped. Reportedly, a total of 120 illegal timber logs were found concealed beneath the iron scrap in the Tata truck.
Further, two alleged smugglers by Prem Chand (53) and Narayan Lal Bajya (42), both from Rajasthan, were arrested after they failed to produce proper documentation when law enforcers demanded it during the operation.
The detainees and the seized timber-laden truck have been handed over to the Forest Department for further legal action.
