Imphal: Authorities in Manipur have imposed prohibitory orders in Tamenglong district following violent clashes between two Naga villages over a land dispute, which left at least 25 people—including 12 security personnel—injured, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The unrest erupted on Wednesday evening when nearly 2,000 residents of Old Tamenglong village marched to the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police to submit a memorandum related to a long-standing boundary dispute.
Tensions escalated when residents of the neighbouring Dailong village allegedly pelted stones at the procession, sparking a violent confrontation.
Residents of Duigailong village reportedly joined the clash in support of Dailong, further intensifying the situation.
During the melee, the Public Works Department’s inspection bungalow was set on fire.
Police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
“In total, 25 individuals were injured, including 12 security personnel who were deployed to maintain order,” an official said.
In response, the district administration has enforced restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) across Tamenglong town and surrounding areas, including Dailong, Duigailong, and Old Tamenglong.

The curbs will remain in effect until further notice.
Officials clarified that the incident is rooted in an inter-village land dispute within the Naga community and bears no connection to the wider ethnic conflict between Meiteis and Kukis that has gripped parts of the state since May 2023.
