The North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, reorganised the states in the strategic northeastern region of the country. Under this Act, Manipur and Tripura were granted statehood on January 21, 1972; prior to which they were both union territories, whereas the state of Meghalaya was carved out from Assam due to its distinct terrain from the rest of Assam.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended greetings to the people of Manipur, calling the state their pride.

In a post on X, Shah wrote, “Statehood Day greetings to our sisters and brothers of Manipur. Blessed with a vibrant culture and talented people, Manipur has always been our pride. May the state reach new heights in the times to come.”

Shah also extended greetings to the people of Tripura, lauding the state’s development and calling it a proud contributor to India’s growth.
