Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday dismissed allegations of uranium-related activities in the state, particularly in the Garo Hills region, terming them “baseless and unfounded.”
“There is no credible information or evidence suggesting that such operations are taking place. Those in responsible positions should avoid making unverified claims merely to attract attention,” Sangma said.
The chief minister said that while the government remains open to examining any verifiable proof, no such reports have been received so far.
“We have been very clear — uranium mining will not be allowed in Meghalaya. However, if anyone provides concrete evidence of such activities, the government will take prompt action,” he asserted.
His remarks come after BJP leader Bernard Marak alleged that illegal uranium extraction was underway in parts of Garo Hills.
Meanwhile, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has called upon the state authorities to take swift and stringent measures in light of recent reports suggesting possible illegal uranium mining in the region.
