Imphal: Tensions flared in Manipur’s Kamjong district on Wednesday after unidentified armed assailants torched multiple homes in two remote villages, prompting the district administration to impose an indefinite curfew in the affected areas.
The violence unfolded in the Sahamphung sub-division, where several thatched-roof houses in Gampal and Haiyang villages were set ablaze while most residents were away working in their agricultural fields.
According to preliminary reports, at least seven homes were destroyed in the suspected arson attack.
“Unidentified individuals targeted these villages during the early hours when residents were engaged in cultivation. The motive remains unclear, but investigations are underway,” a district official confirmed.
In response to the incident, Kamjong District Magistrate Rangnamei Rang Peter imposed a round-the-clock curfew in both villages starting from 2 pm Wednesday.
The order, issued under sub-section 1 of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), restricts all movement outside residences to prevent further escalation.
In his official statement, the district magistrate cited the potential threat to public safety and property, warning that such acts of violence could “lead to a serious breach of peace, endanger public tranquility, and pose risks to human lives and assets.”

The curfew order exempts personnel involved in law enforcement, emergency response, and other essential government services.
Security forces have been deployed in the area to maintain order, and a probe is underway to identify those responsible for the attack.
No casualties have been reported so far, but authorities are closely monitoring the situation amid concerns of further unrest.
