Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Mizoram and Manipur on September 13, marking a significant visit to the Northeast, officials indicated on Monday.
According to sources in Mizoram, the Prime Minister’s itinerary includes inaugurating the newly completed Bairabi-Sairang railway project, a 51.38-km stretch that connects Aizawl with Assam’s Silchar under the Centre’s Act East Policy to enhance regional connectivity and trade.
Following the event in Aizawl, Modi is likely to travel to Manipur—his first trip to the state since ethnic clashes erupted in May 2023.
While Manipur authorities have yet to officially confirm the visit, top-level reviews are underway.
Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel reportedly chaired a meeting on security arrangements, with strict instructions to follow the Blue Book guidelines for venues such as Kangla in Imphal and the Peace Ground in Churachandpur.
Security has been tightened across Manipur in anticipation of the possible visit.
A directive issued by the state’s DGP has put all police and paramilitary personnel on high alert, banning leave between September 7 and 14 except in emergencies.

Officials hinted that the Prime Minister could also inaugurate the newly constructed state secretariat and other completed projects during the visit.
In Mizoram, preparations are in full swing. Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena met senior officials to plan traffic arrangements, security measures, and public participation in the Aizawl event.
The inauguration will include government employees, farmers, and students from various institutions.
The visit comes amid continuing tensions in Manipur, where over 260 people have died and thousands remain displaced since last year’s ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
