Imphal/Itanagar: Two minor earthquakes, measuring 3.2 and 3.6 on the Richter scale, shook Manipur’s Imphal East district and Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district, respectively, on Wednesday.
Officials from both states reported no casualties or property damage resulting from the tremors.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the first quake occurred in Manipur at a depth of 37 kms, while the second struck Arunachal Pradesh at a shallower depth of 5 kms.
Both events caused mild tremors that were felt in nearby areas.
The northeastern region has experienced a series of mild earthquakes in recent weeks.
On June 2, tremors measuring 3.3 and 3.5 on the Richter scale were recorded in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lepa Rada district and Manipur’s Churachandpur district, respectively.
This was followed by a 3.6-magnitude quake in Assam’s Kamrup district on June 3.
Last month, on May 28, three successive quakes, the strongest measuring 5.2, struck Manipur’s hilly Churachandpur and Noney districts within nine hours.
Fortunately, no damage or casualties were reported from those incidents.
The northeastern region, which includes eight states, lies in one of the world’s most seismically active zones.
In May alone, the region recorded 20 earthquakes, with Arunachal Pradesh experiencing seven, Manipur five, and Assam and Meghalaya four each.

Most of these tremors ranged between 3 and 4 in magnitude, according to NCS data.
The frequency of these quakes has heightened concerns among authorities and the public. Structural safety has become a priority, with increased emphasis on building earthquake-resistant infrastructure to mitigate risks.
The region’s susceptibility to seismic activity underscores the importance of ongoing preparedness and vigilance.
