IMPHAL: Days after a horrifying video of two tribal women stripped and paraded naked in Manipur sparked national outrage, a 37-year-old married woman hailing from Churachandpur district has lodged an FIR against a group of tribal men for allegedly gang-raping her during her desperate bid for safety, on August 9.
According to the victim, the disturbing incident occurred at Khumujamba Meitei Leikai in Churachandpur district on May 3, and the victim has identified the perpetrators as “unidentified Kuki men”. After months of silence, the victim lodged an FIR at Bishnupur police station stating that so far she had kept mum about the horrific incident to “save herself and her family’s honour”. She also added that she was so severely depressed that she contemplated ending her life. The Bishnupur police have transferred the case to Churachandpur police station and thorough investigation on the matter is on.
In her statement to law enforcement, the victim recounted the horrifying ordeal that unfolded around 6:30 pm on that ill-fated day. With her home engulfed in flames, she navigated through the turmoil in a desperate attempt to secure her safety. Tragically, her path crossed with several men who callously subjected her to sexual assault, further shattering her sense of security.
A medical examination of the victim was conducted post the lodging of the FIR and she is currently living in a relief camp of displaced victims of the violence.
