Imphal: An unexploded mortar bomb was found near Koirengei, a kilometer from Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s private residence in Luwangshangbam, on Tuesday morning.
The recovery of the unexploded 51 mm mortar bomb has triggered panic among residents.
The locals claimed that a rocket-propelled bomb was fired last night but failed to detonate.
The authorities have beefed up security measures in the area and initiated an investigation to determine the source of the live bomb and the motive behind its placement near the Chief Minister’s residence.
In a separate incident, a hand grenade was found near the residence of a Public Works Department (PWD) special contractor in Imphal East on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Manipur police issued a press statement late Saturday announcing the arrest of six cadres of the proscribed underground outfit PREPAK (People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak) and the killing of one member in Salungpham, Thoubal district, under the jurisdiction of Heirok police station.
Tensions have escalated in Manipur, resulting in a series of attacks targeting both civilians and security personnel.
