Manipur: Security forces destroy 15 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in Tengnoupal District

Imphal: A joint operation conducted by security forces and the forest division resulted in the destruction of 15 acres of illegally cultivated poppy fields in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district on Saturday.

The poppy eradication drive was carried out in the presence of the SDM of Tengnoupal at hill ranges of Khudei Laipham.

The operation, part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region, targeted illicit poppy cultivation sites within the district.

According to authorities, the destruction of these fields is a significant step in curbing the production and distribution of narcotics.

This action is the latest in a series of operations aimed at tackling illegal poppy growth within Manipur.

“This operation underscores our commitment to eradicating illegal poppy cultivation and combating the drug menace in Manipur,” a spokesperson for the security forces said.

Earlier, security forces in Manipur destroyed 30 acres of illegal poppy plants in an operation carried out in Puleijang village, Kangpokpi district.

In another operation on Saturday, security forces dismantled two illegal bunkers at Mark Hill under Thingsat hill range in Kangpokpi District.

Another three illegal bunkers were also dismantled at Wakan hill range at the adjoining area of Kangpokpi and Imphal East Districts.

Security forces conducting search and area domination operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas of hill and valley districts in Manipur have recovered a significant cache of weapons and ammunition.

The operation, focused on maintaining security and stability in the region, yielded a substantial haul from the Sairemkhul area under Lamshang Police Station in Imphal West District.

Among the recovered items are one 5.56 mm INSAS Light Machine Gun (LMG) with one magazine loaded with 20 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, one AK-56 Rifle, three Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs) with varying magazine capacities (12, 10, and 8 rounds), one 9mm SMG CARBINE 1A1 with one magazine loaded with 8 rounds, one .303 Rifle with one magazine loaded with 5 rounds, one Double Barrel Breech Loading (DBBL) Gun.

Besides, security forces also recovered four HE No. 36 Hand Grenades (without detonators) and four arming rings, one Chinese Hand Grenade (wrapped in black cellotape), two camouflage helmets, three Bulletproof (BP) vests, four BP plates, one camouflage magazine pouch and ne Khukri (knife).
