IMPHAL: In a swift operation, the Manipur police successfully rescued a kidnapped student and apprehended eight individuals suspected to be his captors.
The operation, executed in Imphal West District on Saturday, culminated in the recovery of weapons and the safe return of the hostage.
The arrested individuals, identified as Khwairakpam Rajen Singh (24), Sukham James Singh (23), Moiranghem Amarjit Singh (25), Taorem Rohit Singh (23), Kakyenpaibam Hemjit Singh (21), Sandam Romen Singh (36), Khagembam Dayananda Singh (23), and Sarungbam Umananda (34), were reportedly active cadres the banned militant outfit Kangleipak Communist Party, People’s War Group KCP (PWG) operating under the leadership of Lamyanba Khuman.
The Imphal West Superintendent of Police, Ksh Shivakanta, detailed the events leading to the operation during a media briefing at his office.
According to the police, a complaint was received at Imphal police station around 1 am on Saturday, reporting the kidnapping of 22-year-old Laishram Chinglen Singh.
The incident occurred at DM College of Science, New Boys’ Hostel in Imphal on Friday afternoon around 1:30.
The victim was allegedly abducted for a ransom of Rs. 15 lakh.
In response to the complaint, the police swiftly launched a search drive in different locations, focusing on Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai under Wangoi police station in Imphal West District.
The missing youth was located in a house belonging to one Asem Chaoba (63), and the police successfully rescued him from captivity.
The eight suspected kidnappers, who were observed in two vehicles in the area during the early hours of Saturday, were promptly apprehended.
The police recovered a cache of weapons, including a Ghatak rifle with a magazine containing ten rounds, an AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing six rounds, and a .32 pistol with a magazine containing six rounds.
Additionally, 13 mobile handsets, a sword (samurai), and two cars were seized from their possession.
The arrested individuals are now in police custody, and further investigations are underway to unravel the full extent of their involvement in criminal activities.
