Imphal: In an effort to crack down on the illegal installation of modified silencer pipes in motorbikes, the Manipur Police seized 23 modified silencer pipes over the past two days.
The seizures were carried out in different areas of Churachandpur district.
Traffic police in Churachandpur used a bulldozer to publicly crush and destroy the modified silencers as part of an intensified drive to enforce rules against excessive noise that violates the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) and affects public health.
Officials said the action was aimed at deterring riders from fitting unauthorised exhaust systems that violate motor vehicle norms and cause excessive noise.
Police stated that modified silencer pipes are not only illegal but also pose a significant public health risk, especially to the elderly and individuals with health conditions who are more susceptible to the harmful effects of prolonged exposure to loud noise.
The vehicles were released only after the owners installed the recommended silencers.

The detained individuals were released on personal recognisance bonds after their guardians were summoned to the district police station and undertook not to repeat such activities. Authorities warned that similar drives would continue and violators would face penalties, including hefty fines, in the future.
