IMPHAL: Inner Manipur MP Prof Bimol Akoijam has urged the Union Health Ministry to elevate the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur to the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
During Zero Hour of the ongoing Lok Sabha session on Friday, the Congress MP highlighted the crucial role RIMS has been playing in the region’s healthcare sector.
He asserted that the medical institute has the potential to make substantial contributions to the healthcare sector if recognized as an institute of national importance.
Akoijam said that the 52-year-old institution has been instrumental in producing many healthcare professionals, who are serving in India and abroad.
The institute caters to patients from neighbouring states and countries like Myanmar, he said.
The MP stressed that upgrading RIMS to an AIIMS would significantly enhance the region’s healthcare infrastructure and contribute to the economic development of Manipur.
He also underscored the importance of addressing the mental health needs of the Northeastern region, which has been affected by decades of conflict and urbanization.
He urged the union health minister to establish a centrally-run mental health hospital and institute in the state to address these challenges.
He appealed to the Union Health Minister to take prompt action to address these pressing needs.
