Imphal: A mob on Saturday stormed and dismantled a makeshift Assam Rifles camp in Manipur’s Kamjong district, following allegations of harassment and restrictions on the transportation of timber.
According to officials, the incident occurred in the Hongbei area, with members of the mob reportedly belonging to the Kasom Khullen block in the Naga-majority district.
Tensions escalated after Assam Rifles personnel allegedly barred the movement of timber intended for house construction in Kasom Khullen.
The situation turned violent when Assam Rifles personnel used tear gas and fired warning shots into the air to disperse the protesters.
However, the mob retaliated by destroying the temporary camp and demanding the removal of Assam Rifles from the area.
No casualties were reported in the confrontation.
Manipur CM appeals to Naga leaders for help
Amid ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday called on leaders of the Naga community, including church and community heads, to play a pivotal role in resolving the state’s prolonged ethnic crisis.
Speaking at a program in Maram, Senapati district, Singh emphasised the importance of collective efforts to restore peace in Manipur.
The state has witnessed violent clashes between Kuki and Meitei communities since May 2023, which have resulted in over 250 deaths and left thousands displaced.
Singh appealed for forgiveness and unity, stating, “Whatever happened has happened. It’s time to forget and forgive. We need to walk together on the path of peace and bring back the Manipur of the past.”
He urged Naga leaders to act as mediators in the conflict and assured that grievances could be addressed within the framework of the Constitution and state laws.
The chief minister also called on elected representatives, former leaders, and church authorities to support efforts toward overcoming the crisis, reinforcing his vision of a unified and peaceful Manipur.
