Imphal: A fresh clash erupted between unidentified miscreants and police at three different locations in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Thursday evening, days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.
According to police, the incident erupted around 8pm at Bongmol, followed by Pearsonmun village and then Phailien Bazar.
The miscreants were reportedly destroying and removing decorations prepared for the likely visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Churachandpur district on Saturday.
Officials said the miscreants tore down banners and cut-outs put up along the roads and vandalised barricades erected for the Prime Minister’s visit.
Police said that Bongmol is around 1km from the Border Security Force (BSF) helipad where Modi is likely to land to attend the programme at Peace Ground in Churachandpur, adding that no tear gas shells or mock bombs were fired and that the mob was brought under control at around 9.10pm.
No injury was reported in the incident, he added.
Paramilitary forces have launched flag marches and intensified patrolling in Churachandpur to restore order and normalcy.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Manipur on Saturday, where he will unveil projects worth Rs 8,500 crore. He will lay the foundation stones for development projects valued at Rs 7,300 crore from Peace Ground in Churachandpur and inaugurate infrastructure works worth Rs 1,200 crore from the state capital, Imphal.

Meanwhile, in Imphal, preparations for the Prime Minister’s likely visit continued till late evening.
Officials confirmed that no video coverage will be allowed for the media except for DD News, though photography will be allowed at Kangla during the event on September 13.
