IMPHAL: The Manipur government has extended the suspension of internet and mobile data services across several districts of the state amid security concerns.
The decision, which affects the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching, comes after a comprehensive review of the security situation.
The suspension, initially imposed on September 10, 2024, has been extended for an additional five days, effective from 3:00 PM on September 15 to 3:00 PM on September 20, 2024.
On September 12, the state government conditionally lifted the suspension of internet services for Broadband connections (ILL & FTTH).
However, after assessing the ongoing situation, the authorities decided to extend the suspension for mobile data services and certain internet services, excluding the conditional lifting for broadband, for another five days.
The order was issued under the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, to prevent the spread of misinformation, maintain public safety, and avoid potential unrest.
The suspension will continue to affect general mobile data and internet services through VPNs and VSATs, but broadband services (ILL & FTTH) will remain operational under the previous conditional lifting order.
The extension aims to preserve public safety and prevent further destabilization.

All mobile service providers have been instructed to strictly enforce the suspension. The government has requested the public to refrain from activities that might further exacerbate the situation or lead to a continued suspension of services.
Authorities have further noted that the order may be lifted at any time, depending on improvements in the security situation on the ground.
