IMPHAL: The Centre has directed that two fresh battalions of CRPF, each consisting of 1,000 personnel, will replace a few units of Assam Rifles in Manipur, which has been affected by ethnic violence.
The decision was taken to bolster security efforts in the state, which has been grappling with ethnic violence since May last year.
Battalion number 58 from Warangal in Telangana and Battalion number 112 from Latehar in Jharkhand will be moved. The 58th Battalion will be headquartered in Kangvai (Churachandpur), while the 112th Battalion will be stationed around Imphal.
The decision to deploy CRPF battalions comes in response to the withdrawal of two Assam Rifles units from Manipur for operational duties in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the Northeast.
The Union Home Ministry has directed that all companies within these two battalions will be deployed in various violence-affected areas of Manipur to help maintain peace and order.
