Imphal: Manipur Congress unit president Keisham Megachandra on Friday accused the state government of repeatedly failing to ensure the timely and dignified resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The remarks came a day after Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel announced that the government plans to resettle 10,000 IDP families, comprising over 40,000 people, by March.

In a post on X, Keisham said, “The Government of Manipur has repeatedly failed to ensure timely and dignified resettlement of IDPs, reflecting grave irresponsibility and continued neglect of the suffering people of the state.”

The Wangkhem legislator added, “Despite repeated assurances, thousands of displaced families continue to live in uncertainty. The prolonged delay in resettlement highlights the government’s lack of urgency and sensitivity towards the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Manipur.”

He further noted that while the chief secretary’s statement claimed that the government has been regularly updating people on IDP resettlement progress, “the ground reality tells a different story.

“Thousands of displaced persons continue to languish in relief camps without adequate facilities, security, livelihood support, or a clear roadmap for permanent rehabilitation,” he stated.

“Announcements and targets alone cannot substitute concrete action. The people of Manipur deserve transparency, accountability, and a time-bound resettlement plan that restores dignity and normalcy to the lives of IDPs,” he added.

Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel said the state government aims to resettle over 40,0000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) by March 31. He said 16,500 IDPs have so far been resettled in the northeastern state.

At least 260 people were killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023 in Manipur. The state has been under President’s Rule since February 2025.
