Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday acknowledged the ongoing efforts by both the Centre and the state government to find a lasting resolution to the ongoing crisis in the state.
However, he stressed that achieving a permanent solution may take time due to the delicate and complex nature of the situation.
Speaking at a program marking the Nupi Lan commemoration, Singh remarked, “Both the state and central governments are working diligently towards a permanent solution. However, considering the fragile and longstanding nature of the crisis, it will take time to resolve.”
Regarding the re-imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas, Singh said, “The state government has requested the Centre to review and reconsider the implementation of AFSPA in these areas.”
He called for public cooperation in the government’s efforts to restore peace and harmony in the state.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the significance of Nupi Lal Numit, an annual event remembering the pivotal role played by Manipuri women in resisting British colonialism in 1904 and 1939.
“In addition to these historical events, we must also honor the bravery of Manipuri women in other key moments of history, such as their resistance against the Burmese during the Seven Year Devastation period (1819-1826),” Singh said.
Singh praised the ongoing contributions of Manipuri women in various fields, including social, economic, art, culture, hospitality, and sports.
He noted that today’s Manipuri women continue to lead the way in many areas, showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage on both national and international platforms.
The CM also highlighted several state initiatives aimed at supporting women, including the Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme, which provides financial assistance of Rs 500 per month to unemployed women aged 40 and above.
Singh also spoke about the central government’s initiative to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill 2023 in Parliament, marking a significant step for women’s empowerment.
In addition to women’s welfare, Singh discussed various government schemes for students.
On the topic of Myanmar refugees, Singh responded to media queries by saying, “Those who are criticizing should come and see the ground realities for themselves. Refugees are being treated according to the United Nations guidelines, under the supervision of both the Government of India and the Government of Manipur. They are being treated equally.”
Earlier, Singh, along with other legislators, paid floral tributes to the statue of Nupi Lan at the Nupi Lan Memorial Complex in Imphal.
Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Th. Biswajit Singh, who also attended the event, emphasized that Nupi Lal is a day to honor the courage and sacrifices of women freedom fighters, calling it a moment of pride for all Manipuris.
