Imphal: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday accused certain politicians of being hand in glove with individuals and groups looking to fragment the state of Manipur.
Singh claimed that the excessive politicisation of ethnic issues in the region has led to confusion and internal conflict, further complicating the situation.
Speaking at an event in Khangabok, Thoubal district, Singh noted that many people still struggle to fully understand the ongoing violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has claimed over 250 lives and displaced thousands since May 2023.
He emphasised that the state government’s opposition is not directed at long-settled individuals, but rather at new immigrants involved in illegal drug activities.
“Our duty is to identify and understand who our real enemies are and who has launched attacks on us. We must defend ourselves against them. However, excessive politics has clouded the situation and stirred internal conflict. What’s worse, some politicians are actually hand in glove with those who want to tear Manipur apart,” Singh said, highlighting the damaging role of certain political figures.
While Singh refrained from naming any specific individuals or parties, he warned that those aiming to divide the state have used agents to provoke division.
He added that these agents, embedded in the Imphal Valley, are working in concert with forces trying to destabilise Manipur.

Singh remained firm in his belief that Manipur will remain united. “We are all one. Communities like Thadou, Mate, Gangte, Vaiphei, Paite, Tangkhul, Mao, and Maram are all brothers.
Those who have been settled here for years continue to live together in harmony. Our only opposition is against the new immigrants involved in drug-related activities,” he concluded.
The chief minister’s statements underscored the ongoing tension in the state and his call for unity in the face of adversity.
