Manipur: Thousands of students in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Wednesday marched in protest against efforts to form a popular government in the state, while pressing for a “political solution” for the Kuki-Zo community.
The march, organised by the Joint Students of Churachandpur, started from Lamka Public Ground in the district headquarters and ended at Tuibong after covering a distance of about two kilometres. Demonstrators raised slogans demanding a “political solution and not a popular government” and carried placards bearing the message “no solution, no rest.”
Student leaders submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the additional deputy commissioner, seeking a political solution before the installation of a popular government in Manipur.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands displaced in ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.
Following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh last year, the Centre imposed President’s rule in the state. The Manipur Legislative Assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been placed under suspended animation.

The memorandum also stated that there has been widespread displacement amid a breakdown of administration, with thousands of people continuing to live in relief camps and unable to return to their homes.
