Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for introducing a regulation that allows Myanmar residents living within 10km of the international border to temporarily enter the state with a ‘border pass’ issued by the Assam Rifles.

Singh described the move as ‘a good beginning’, highlighting the importance of regulating cross-border movement.

He thanked the Home Ministry for introducing the new regulations and said that “nobody paid attention to who was going in or out of the country” earlier.

“I thank the Union Home Minister and the Ministry of Home Affairs for introducing this regulation. Not only Assam Rifles, but also the state police, health officials, and DC office staff at the border are involved. I urge everyone to take extra care and use advanced machinery to prevent illegal immigration,” Singh said.

In response to concerns about social media misuse, the chief minister said that it was “very unfortunate” that social media was being used to spread mockery and misinformation about the state.

Singh also said that a museum showcasing the history of Manipur will be constructed at Canchipur.

“The proposed museum will be fully computerized and will cost around Rs 40 crore. Our goal is to educate the current and future generations about the past and present history of the state and the country and to understand the complexities of Manipur,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that the immediate cause of the ongoing crisis in the state, which began on May 3, 2023, was the rally staged against the Manipur High Court’s order, which asked the state to consider reservations for the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list.
