IMPHAL: In response to adverse weather conditions sweeping across Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced the temporary closure of all schools and colleges in the state on May 6 and 7.

This move aims to safeguard the well-being of students and properties in the face of inclement weather.

Chief Minister Singh, in a statement on social media, stressed on the importance of citizen safety, urging residents to remain indoors and heed official advisories.

Following a hailstorm on May 5 that wreaked havoc in various parts of the state, Chief Minister Singh urged the public to report damages caused by the extreme weather.

He highlighted the government’s readiness to extend immediate aid to affected individuals and provided helpline numbers for different districts to streamline assistance efforts.

Taking to social media, Chief Minister Singh urged the affected individuals to seek support without hesitation.

In a Facebook post, Chief Minister Singh urged those whose homes suffered damage in the recent hailstorm to submit photographs to their respective deputy commissioners for immediate repair.

The reassurance comes in the wake of widespread damages reported across Manipur.

Officials confirmed that heavy rains accompanied by hailstorms battered several areas of Manipur earlier, resulting in significant damages to houses and vehicles.

Localities such as Canchipur and Tera in Imphal West bore the brunt of the hailstorm, with reports of tin roofs punctured by hailstones and hutments blown away by strong winds.

Additionally, windshields of parked vehicles incurred cracks, while trees were uprooted in various areas due to the forceful winds.

Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the adverse weather conditions.

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rains in Manipur and several other Northeastern states until Tuesday.

As Manipur grapples with the aftermath of the severe weather, the authorities remain vigilant, prioritising citizen safety and well-being in its response efforts.

Citizens have been urged to stay informed, adhere to safety guidelines, and reach out for assistance if needed during this period.
