Imphal: In a notable political move, a delegation of about 25 BJP MLAs from Manipur, including former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, has urged BJP North East Coordinator Sambit Patra to form a popular government in the state at the earliest.

The proposal was made during a meeting held at Manipur Bhawan in New Delhi on Wednesday (October 8) by the MLAs, who had been camping in the national capital.

Notably, the BJP MLAs travelled to New Delhi on October 4 to urge the Central leadership to take immediate steps to restore an elected government.

They reportedly stated that if the Centre is unable to form a government, the Assembly should be dissolved.

However, Sambit Patra advised the BJP MLAs to bring a consensus among the Meitei, Naga and Kuki MLAs first to restore an elected Government in Manipur.

During the meeting, Sambit Patra stated that the Centre is working to restore an elected government in the state before the current President’s Rule tenure, which was extended for six months from August 13 concludes.

Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9 amid the prolonged ethnic unrest in the state.

Some MLAs expressed their dissatisfaction over not being able to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President J.P. Nadda during their visit.

Patra reportedly assured the MLAs that they would get an opportunity to meet the party’s senior leaders after the Bihar polls, indicating that further consultations may take place later this year.
