Imphal: Former Manipur Chief Minister and BJP leader N. Biren Singh on Friday said that party legislators from the state have urged central leaders to expedite the formation of a popular government, reflecting the collective wish of both the public and the MLAs.

Speaking to reporters at the BJP headquarters after a rendition of the national song Vande Mataram, Singh said the legislators are united in their demand for an elected government.

“We recently visited Delhi, where 25 MLAs met BJP North East in-charge Sambit Patra at Manipur Bhavan. We conveyed to him that the people want a popular government to be installed soon and also raised issues concerning internally displaced persons (IDPs). He assured us that the matter would be taken up with senior leaders, as the situation in the state has improved considerably,” Singh said.

He added, “Six of us also met BJP’s Organisation General Secretary B.L. Santhosh and reiterated the same demand. He informed us that the issue is under consideration and that he plans to visit Imphal soon.”

On issues concerning internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state, Singh said, “The governor is well qualified and experienced and is working hard to bring changes in the lives of IDPs. However, IDPs have conveyed to me that bureaucrats are not reaching out to them often.”

Appealing to officials, Singh said, “The IDPs are facing severe hardships. Taking care of them should be our shared responsibility. We MLAs will also extend all possible support.”
