IMPHAL: The Manipur Legislative Assembly has reaffirmed its resolution passed on August 5, 2022, urging the Centre to expedite the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Addressing the assembly, Chief Minister Singh on Friday, stressed on the critical importance of the NRC implementation in safeguarding the interests of Manipur and contributing to the greater good of the nation.
“The decision to urge the Government of India to expedite the implementation of the NRC reflects our commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of Manipur. I urge all citizens to support this endeavor as we strive to build a stronger, more prosperous Manipur for generations to come,” the Chief Minister later wrote on his official social media handle.
Expressing concern over the rapid proliferation of new villages across the state, Chief Minister Singh highlighted the existential threat posed to the indigenous population of Manipur.
He highlighted the need to address this issue thoroughly, devoid of political agendas, to secure the future of Manipur.
“The sudden mushrooming of new villages at an alarming rate at various locations in the state directly poses an existential threat to the indigenous population of Manipur. The numbers and data speak for themselves, and I will say this again, if we are going to play politics on this crucial and complex issue, we are going to sink,” asserted Chief Minister Singh in another post on a micro-blogging website.
The Singh-led government has been advocating for the implementation of NRC in the state for quite some time.
Earlier in August 2022, the Manipur assembly had unanimously adopted two private member resolutions to establish a state population commission and implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
These resolutions, moved by Janata Dal (United) legislator Kh Joykishan, were to address the alarming population growth and alleged infiltration of outsiders into Manipur.
