Imphal: The 2nd District Junior Indigenous Naga Wrestling Championship 2024 kick-started on Wednesday at the Astro Turf Ground in Manipur’s Senapati.
Mamoni Doley, Deputy Commissioner of Senapati, inaugurated the event as the chief guest in the presence of senior army officers.
The championship, which will conclude on December 6, aims to promote traditional sports and foster camaraderie among the youth.
Organized by the Senapati District Wrestling Association, Manipur (SDWAM), and sponsored by the Red Shield Division of the Indian Army under Operation Sadbhavna, the event also aims to provide a platform to the young athletes of the region.
Over 66 young participants aged 10 to 20, will be competing in three weight categories namely lightweight (under 55 kg), medium weight (55-65 kg), and heavyweight (65 kg and above).
The event follows the resounding success of the inaugural edition and is dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Naga community.
The winners in each category will receive a cash prize of Rs 35,000, along with medallions and certificates, while the runners-up will be awarded Rs 25,000, medallions, and certificates.

The event highlights the Indian Army’s dedication to fostering community spirit through traditional sports.
The initiative also seeks to identify and nurture young talents in the indigenous Naga wrestling sport.
