Joint Action Committee seeks thorough probe into Manipur woman’s mysterious death in Delhi

Imphal: A Joint Action Committee (JAC) has been formed following the death of Khangembam Priyaluxmi Devi, a 20-year-old woman from Manipur, in New Delhi.

Khangembam Priyaluxmi Devi’s body was found near Maharani Bagh in Delhi’s Sunlight Colony on April 19.

The JAC has called upon the Governor and Chief Secretary of Manipur to intervene and ensure a thorough investigation into the matter.

Devi, who hailed from Ngaikhong Siphai in Bishnupur, had been residing in Delhi since October last year. She was employed at a BPO company located in Noida.

“The death is suspicious. The case must be investigated thoroughly to find out the truth and punish all the persons responsible for her death,” said N. Bishrup, co-convenor of the JAC.

According to police reports, she allegedly jumped from a building terrace in southeast Delhi’s Sunlight Colony. The body arrived in Imphal on April 20 for the final rites.

“There have been numerous instances of discrimination and violence against people from Manipur and the North-East in other states across India. The death of Priyaluxmi is suspicious and she must have been killed,” JAC stated.

Further, the committee has raised concerns about disturbing social media posts regarding the deceased.

“No person should post comments about the deceased and her family based on rumours. Those negative or bad comments circulating on social media with regard to Priyaluxmi have hurt the sentiments of the family members who are mourning the departure of their loved one,” Bishrup noted.

Persons who have made such comments must delete their posts. If the posts/comments are not deleted, then the JAC would take legal action against them, he warned.

He further appealed to State organisations in Delhi to take appropriate steps to prevent such cases from happening in the future.
