Imphal: Security agencies at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal carried out a high-intensity mock bomb threat exercise on Thursday to assess emergency response preparedness and coordination among multiple agencies.
The annual drill, led by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in collaboration with the Airport Authority of India (AAI), saw active participation from the Dog Squad, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Bureau of Immigration (BOI), Manipur Police, AAI Fire Services, airlines, and other airport stakeholders.
According to AAI officials, the simulation aimed to evaluate real-time response mechanisms in handling potential bomb threats and to ensure a seamless inter-agency approach to crisis management.
“The exercise validated our rapid response protocols and strengthened coordination among all security and operational units,” a CISF official said.
“Imphal Airport remains fully equipped to handle high-risk security situations with precision and teamwork.”
Located about six kilometres from the heart of Imphal, the airport operates regular flights connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Agartala, and other cities.
A senior AAI officer said similar mock drills will soon be conducted across 17 operational airports in the Northeast to enhance overall regional aviation security.
The exercise comes weeks after a drone sighting near Imphal airport led to a temporary suspension of flight operations.
The incident, reported by an IndiGo pilot on approach from Agartala, raised concerns over aerial security and prompted heightened surveillance in surrounding areas.
Following the incident, authorities issued strict advisories against operating drones near the airport and adjoining regions, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Nambol, and Bishnupur.

The AAI warned that unauthorised drone flights could endanger aircraft, cause flight disruptions, and invite legal action under existing aviation and security laws.
Imphal West Superintendent of Police Shivakanta Singh also urged the public to report drone activity in restricted zones, noting that such operations directly affect aircraft movement.
Last year, anti-drone systems were deployed by the Assam Rifles in the outskirts of Imphal Valley to counter potential threats from rogue drones.
AAI officials reaffirmed that ensuring the safety and security of passengers and aircraft operations continues to be their top priority.
