Imphal: Relentless rainfall over the past 48 hours has triggered widespread flooding and landslides across Manipur, leaving 3,802 people affected and damaging 883 houses, officials reported on Sunday.
Severe waterlogging has been reported in several parts of Imphal, including Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon, after a swollen river breached its embankments, submerging large sections of the city and surrounding areas. Imphal East has emerged as the worst-affected district.
According to officials, as many as 3,275 localities and villages have been impacted by the heavy rain since Friday night.
Two people have sustained injuries, and at least 64 animals have died due to the floods and landslides.
A total of 12 landslides have occurred across the state so far.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited flood-hit areas in Imphal on Sunday, accompanied by Chief Secretary PK Singh and other senior officials.
The team surveyed severely affected locations including Kangla Nongpok Thong, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Singjamei Bridge.
In a statement from Raj Bhavan, the Governor emphasised the importance of continuous monitoring and instructed officials to take preventive measures to avoid further breaches.
Rescue operations have been launched by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, who have already evacuated nearly 800 people from submerged areas in Imphal East.
Meanwhile, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been put on high alert.
Floodwaters have entered multiple public buildings, including the All India Radio Imphal complex and the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, following the overflow of the Imphal River at Checkon.
Officials also reported that water levels in the Iril River in Imphal East district rose above the danger mark on Sunday but have not yet breached embankments.
