IMPHAL: In a fresh wave of violence in Manipur, a man was found dead and another was severely injured in two separate incidents on Tuesday.
The dead body discovered in the Heingang constituency – the very heart of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s political stronghold – is said to be that of a 50-year-old man, reports in the local press stated.
Local authorities have reached out to the public, seeking their cooperation in identifying the deceased individual. The body currently rests at the morgue of the JNIMS hospital in the Imphal East district of Manipur.
Adding to the unsettling events, a 38-year-old man named Rajkumar Bung was targeted in an armed attack by unknown assailants in a separate incident of violence on Tuesday morning.
The incident took place at Wangoo under the jurisdiction of the Wangoo police station. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his left calf. While investigations are underway, the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting, leaving the local community and authorities perplexed. The injured individual is presently undergoing treatment at the Wangoo health centre, as confirmed by Manipur police.
In a separate yet concerning development, unidentified miscreants set fire to abandoned structures in Langol, located within the Imphal West district.
At least four houses, one makeshift hut, and a community hall were torched. In response to the incidents of arson, six individuals have been apprehended by the Manipur police for their alleged involvement.
Meanwhile, security forces engaged in search operations across various districts of Manipur have made significant seizures. A total of seven weapons along with 81 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the operations conducted in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi, and Bishnupur districts.
The situation remains tense as local authorities and security personnel work to restore calm and peace to the affected areas.
